The FAT truth

Yesterday, I decided that this week would be one of my "I'm determined to lose weight" weeks.

You must be thinking... "eh?"

The reason it sounds so cynical and almost unbelievable (like you literally don't believe it and neither do I) is because I'm constantly trying to slim down, but I've never been successful and gotten back to the way I was.

Secondly, I decided to write this post because it's the last fashion post that will be hosted on NIBOW. I'll be migrating to WordPress onto a new site called WearMySkin. NIBOW will still remain politics - based.

Let me just br-br-break down my story before I go any further.

As a kid,  I was ridiculously skinny and tall. All through primary school and till around the 9th grade, my Mom would have to take in any pants or clothing she bought me, because I'd leave it falling off behind me as I walked. I wasn't scary thin though. I had meat, boobs, and did a crap load of sport.

In all honesty, I was glad I was that skinny and that I never had any weight problems.

As I approached the tenth grade, I stopped playing a lot of sport because of school and studying; my parents wanted me to concentrate on getting good results for university entrance, and I was determined to work hard at school, as I've always done.

Late nights of studying and lack of exercise resulted in bad eating habits, and going out on weekends never helped the process at all.

In my final year of school, I might have gone out once or twice for the year - that's how much I studied. I'd be up till 2 am on a school night studying because I'd only get home at 4 pm. My Dad would send up a cup of coffee and some snacks for me while I studied, and I became dependent on eating while I worked. I'd also listen to loud music and pace around with my notes like a crazy person. This entire process kept me up and away from sleep.

Exams proved easy for me because it was as if I'd been studying the entire year and when results were released, I was glad-ish.  I got 5 distinctions at first, and sent my other scripts in for remarks, attaining 7 distinctions. I was proud of myself and ready for university.

But that's when it got worse.

I'll be bluntly honest and admit that I bought food almost every day at campus. This was in addition to eating my home-prepared lunch.. If it wasn't someone who'd gone off to get Akhalwayas, it was pizza, McDonald's, a lunch date with friends or a pie (I love pies). My friends Farhana and Shahzaadee literally used to refuse to walk me all the way to East campus for food after a while. They were starving me (love you guys).

So I'd eat at campus, sometimes

Basically I ate and ate and ate and ate.

The damaging part came when I used to lose my appetite on certain days and not eat for the entire day, or even two or three. I'd only consume a miniscule dinner over 2 days and this happened almost every week. I noticed my weight lessening by a few kilos when this happened and the cycle just continued and continued,  till early this year. I welcomed the loss of a few kilos and didn't think it was harmful at and lol because I wasn't forcing myself not to eat. However, I didn't force myself TO eat at that time either.

As first year became second year and second year became third, my nights great longer and longer, my work load ever - increasing,  and my diet ever -worsening.

Last year, certain experiences coupled with late night working left me up for nights at a time. Unfortunately, I didn't care for sleep. I'd eat at 1 am,  sometimes a full meal after having had dinner already in the evening.

The cycle continued and over the years, I picked up weight and didn't care because I was tall and it never looked as if I wasn't healthy anymore.

But au contraire.

Now I notice my bulges, my love handles, and my thunder thighs. I'm not ashamed to say that even though I don't look it, I'm unhealthy and overweight for my size, height and age. I notice the cellulite creeping onto the legs and my tummy losing flatness. I can also fly now with my arms so let me know if you need to take a trip anywhere.

It's a struggle to fit into my clothing and most mornings I end up crying and getting frustrated. I only use a few pair of pants/ jeans because they're the only ones I fit into. Numerous shopping trips have ended with me walking out of stores sobbing at the way I looked. I actually stay away from shopping with people because of the way I feel, even if it's my family. Yeah, sure, they'll tell you the truth about your body and the way you look, but do you want to keep hearing that truth? I don't.

From this week, I've restarted exercising and eating healthily, started playing sport and managing my time again. I make sure I sleep for 8 hours a night, and start my mornings off with something in my tummy, even if it's water. I'm working on a healthier lifestyle more than a skinny body.

Unfortunately, I'm still reeling from the after effects of badly developed habits. Sometimes I snack on food before I sleep. Sometimes when I'm upset, I take it out on my body and eat angrily. Sometimes I eat to try and seek comfort when I'm depressed. Sometimes I stress - eat.  Sometimes I skip meals and binge eat at night. Sometimes I just eat crap because like, YOLO and stuff.

But I always try.

I always try, and that's what counts the most, even if I rethink my actions and still do them. Regardless of how many times I vow to stay steady and fail, it still means I tried and that for a period of time, irrespective of how long, I was successful.

The most important lesson I've learnt is to take care of yourselfDon't let life eat you up, and don't eat life up. You'll just end up fat, and the world will still be there, skinny and healthy as ever.

DEVIOUS MAIDS SERIES RENEWAL ANNOUNCED!

Following the finale of season 2 of Devious Maids, fans were left on edge and dropped into the unknown world of will-or-wont-this-continue. It's often that series are discontinued after the first and second seasons, so we all, including the stars, held high hopes for a continuation of the series. Further worry was inflicted when the lead stars began picking up other television roles and opportunities.

But lo and behold, Dania Ramirez (Rosie Falta), Roselyn Sanchez (Carmen Luna) and Edy Ganem (Valentina Diaz) burst out onto Instagram 30 minutes ago with the amazing news that the series WILL BE RENEWED FOR A THIRD SEASON!

See below for their exciting pictures at the news of the series renewal!

I'm happy to announce that I'm the very first person to officially write about the series renewal! Blogging achievement; take that major news and media sources, ha!.

Lifetime have yet to officially announce the return of the show or reveal any spoilers, but we've all got our own theories!

Season 2 left us hanging on for dear life (literally), so let's br-br-break it down.

In the finale, a shooting occurs outside the church where Rosie and Spence Westmore marry. The bullet shot was intended for Valentina and shot by Ty,  Spence's psychologically unstable nephew and jewellery-thieving gang member.

A curveball whacks us in the face as Ernesto Falta, Rosie's husband, is revealed to be alive just as vows are exchanged. Eek, so many loose ends! Miguel's adoption by Spence, and Rosie's role as an actual maid lay hanging in the clouds for now. Spence's ex-wife isn't seen much in the last few episodes and their son Tucker's living situation also remains unanswered.

Ethan, played by Collin Woodell,  who's pale - skinned, blue-eyed charm left some of us gasping and others in a love - hate relationship with him, exited the show as the leader of the jewellery-thieving gang and is due to star as a werewolf in the second season of The Originals, releasing this October. I think he'd look pretty sexy as part of a pack, but I'm Team Klaus.

Tony Bashara, played by Dominic Adams (with whom I interacted with over the last month in a situation I'm not too proud of), isn't expected to be seen in season 3 due to his affair with Evelyn Powell being concluded. I'll definitely miss his Middle Eastern vibes. DAT BOD THO?!

Valentina planned to leave Beverly Hills with Remi but who knows what's to follow following the shooting? Will she head off to begin her career in fashion with Remi at her side or will she die as a result of the shooting? I'm hanging on for the former - I adore Valentina!

Remi, played by Drew Van Acker, can also be seen in popular series Pretty Little Liars, so look out for him there!

Zoila Diaz,  played by Judy Reyes,  is in demand by both her ex-husband Pablo and boyfriend Javier. The nail biter finale included a further battle trench being drawn between the two men with Zoila finding out that she's pregnant! I suppose fans will be torn between hoping who's the father,  and I'm definitely on Team Javier!

Genevieve Delatour's health remains in the midst as no kidney donors have been found. She seemingly makes peace with her situation towards the end of the season but can she really deal with it, being the diva (kind hearted, but diva nonetheless) that she is?

Evelyn and Adrian Powell's relationship seemed to have overcome crazy obstacles in both season 1 and 2. We're left wondering whether their relationship will see betterment with episodes to come or have they proven their strangely competitive relationship to be ever-strained and constantly confusing?

Carmen Luna,  played by the multi-talented Roselyn Sanchez,  has an awkwardly floating role in season 2 but doesn't fail to grip the audience with her self loving personality. Her music career hasn't taken off and she was fired as a maid, so her future role is quite unknown! Roselyn has also just released a single with Flo Rida as well as performed at the MTV Video Music Awards with the Flo himself.

As for the lead character, Marisol, played by former Ugly Betty star Ana Ortiz,  her husband Nicolas Deering admits to having killed the Powell's son Barratt in an accident, and the audience was left waiting to find out if he'll be turning himself into the police or not, and whether the Deerings will remain married. I didn't particularly take a liking to him and I'm more interested in the other characters,  unfortunately!

All in all, I'm the happiest to hear that the series is being renewed for a third season.

I've repeatedly watched the last two seasons, being an avid Desperate Housewives fan (Devious Maids is co-produced by Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria).

What are your thoughts about Devious Maids and what's got you wanting more (or not wanting more)?

The Naomi Kate Cara Jourdan tee

On Monday, Jourdan Dunn stepped out in the loudest T-Shirt to grace the fashion world:  a plain white tee printed with the name's of the modelling world's most influential women: Naomi Campbell, Kate Moss, Cara Delevignge and herself, Jourdan Dunn. (See pic below)

Tongues were wagging as soon as uploaded a picture, and if you want this T-Shirt and don't have wads of cash to hand out, you're in luck!

Thanks to Modelinia, this supermodel tee can be found through the Missuided online store for... (Wait for it)... $19. Yes. NINETEEN DOLLARS. That's about R200 for a tee that Jourdann Dunn is currently donning.

And if you're a Cara-nator like I am, the “Cara Made Me Do It” tee by Les Benjamins worn by Jourdan and Suki Waterhouse ("Suki made me do it"), will be available soon, so look out for that!

Or subscribe to my blog and you'll know instantly :)

Jenny from the Bronx

Bronx Woman has released their new Summer 2015 range, catering for the cared foot with a variety of styles, inlcuding wedged heels, boots and gladiator sandals.

I'm usually inclined to buying sleek heels so I didn't find any appealing wedge heels, but I adore the "Paris" leather pump heel (R549), an extremely classic, beautiful and versatile style. I dig the "Florence" shoe (R399) because like, VINTAAAAGE, and love the "Westee" leather boot (R549) with stitching that borders on the edge of cowboy and high fashion (see my favourites below). The boot would be my first buy; they're great with jeans, skirts, dresses and shorts.

Winter, won't you stay?

I hate sunlight and any season or weather associated with it, and I'll sound it from ice-topped mountains whilst possibly wearing a onesie.

Sadly, the time of pollen, sunburn and crap has arrived. I'm pretty bleak writing about this, it really brings me no joy.

There are a few who side with me, but I imagine most of you think I'm pretty bonkers (I am, actually). Those of us who prefer winter are often perceived as the unsocial bunch who revel in our own company and loneliness. That's bullshit and you're welcome at my place for tea, yeah?

Anyway, today I was judging at the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation Youth Speech Contest. The drive to Lenasia was long and too hot for a jacket, so I saved my skin with a draped scarf around my shoulders, and kept my floppy hat in check. See the deets and pics below and drop me a comment! I didn't crop any pictures because like.. Spring and stuff  (Idk).

Here's the OOTD deal:

Jeans: Cotton On (Boyfriend jeans)

Shoes: Foschini

Hat: Forever New

Necklace: Vintage Afghan necklace (belonged to my gran)

Tank top: Nicci Boutiques

Scarf: Mr Price

Are you enjoying Spring? Tell me why and I'll try looking for those reasons as well!

Paris and... Nicci?

I'm sure I don't have to introduce you to the countless boutiques that are Nicci. You'll find them in almost every major shopping centre, their feminine-designed name headlining their boutiques.

So it comes as no surprise that when they launch new ranges and new stores, they welcome the public and invite every blogger they know to come and enjoy the fun, fashion and goodies.

Nicci Boutiques recently launched their summer 2014 range at their Hyde Park store and well, my twitter and instagram feed was all things Nicci for the next few days (see pics below)! Nicci's launches are inviting and enjoyable with their attentive and amazing treats! At the launch, a Froyo bar was available, as well as goodie bags for attendees, including lots of candy and gifts. You can imagine that the who's who of the bloggersphere were there, a thing that Nicci never ceases to show. They always invite bloggers to their events, even the newbies who show interest in the store! Some visitors enjoyed massages outside the launch, some arrived early and couldn't get enough of the denim and blue-infused items, bright orange prints, and soft pastel pink ranges, and some waited till things had calmed down to enjoy the store.

I'm not a lover of summer although I love prints, cottons and colours. I can't help hating the sun, but I don't hate clothing, so I choose to enjoy them as much as possible till I can pile on my (very awesome and chic, not long-johns and spence-like clothing, hehe!) layers in winter.

My favourite items from their launch are their summer-inspired sneakers, denims and blue prints, and printed jumpsuits. I've recently been super into jumpsuits, and every girl needs a pair of sneakers - girly or not. Besides, these are perfect (see pics below) for the girly girls out there, they're printed on and have a white lace finish atop the printing. As for denims, I'm sure you've seen Rihanna and Beyonce (no, not Katy Perry's crazy denim ensemble at the VMA's) sporting denim skirts and jackets all over the place. Yes yes, they're coming back.

All in all, Nicci is one of South Africa's most well-known boutiques, with stores spanning throughout the country. Find one close to you and experience their service and products for yourself!

Nicci has also just returned from a trip to Paris so they can stock your winter 2015 closets with all things le classique. Paris and Nicci. So Hilton, so fashionable, so chic.

Nicci are launching their summer range at the V and A Waterfront Store today (10 September) from 9am-6pm, so if you're in Cape Town, you know where to go!

Don't forget to keep up with their social media and you could be attending their launches as well! I hope to see some of you at JHB events!
